Environmental and Land Use Litigation

Gravel and Shea attorneys have substantial experience assisting clients with a broad range of environmental and land use matters. The group regularly represents client applicants in contested permit proceedings, including Act 250 cases, whether in the District Commissions, at the Environmental Board, or in appeals to the Vermont Supreme Court; obtaining State development permits for issues like air and wastewater discharge, solid and hazardous waste, and wetlands protection; and various local and municipal land use matters, such as subdivision approvals and conditional use applications. Many of these matters have also been litigated on appeal before the Vermont Environmental Court. In addition, our attorneys successfully defend clients' State environmental penalty cases, local zoning enforcement actions, and property condemnation cases. In recent years, we have obtained million dollar compensation jury verdicts for our clients in eminent domain actions that are among the largest such awards given in Vermont.
